An international competition for a new train station in Xi'an, judged on sustainability and dry construction systems. The entry, A Gesture of Harmony, plans the station and its surrounding precinct as one coherent place.

CHALLENGE

Handle the scale and movement of a six-track city station while making arrival calm and green, and tie the station into a new precinct of shops, offices, a hotel, homes and parkland beside the river.

APPROACH

The plan draws on the Chinese characters for peace and harmony, whose brush strokes suggest fluid movement. The station works in three layers: a seamless journey from entry to platform, gardens that give travellers space for calm, and an iconic roof that ties everything together. Four covered platforms, 207 m long and 7.8 m wide, serve six tracks below a concourse with 4,000 m² of shops, while Harmony Park and gardens run through the station as a green spine. The precinct adds a 10,000 m² shopping centre, a 19,500 m² hotel, 20,000 m² of offices, a canal pavilion, an amphitheatre and new homes. The design was developed on a 14.5 m structural grid, through to sections and details of the canopy and columns.

OUTCOME

Submitted to the international competition with a full package: precinct masterplan, design diagrams, renders and technical sections.
