A city of neighbourhoods
Six strategies for a thriving inner-city neighbourhood, tested on West End.
West End’s riverside streets already hold the ingredients of a great neighbourhood: character, community and a mix of uses. This study asks how growth can strengthen those qualities rather than dilute them.
It proposes six connected strategies, each placed where it can do the most good, so that work, sport, culture, commerce, play and street life reinforce one another.
01
Integrate employment with the neighbourhood
Activity nodes that give a sense of place, reinforce local character and pride, and create distinctive subtropical spaces where residents, businesses and visitors connect.
02
Support sports and fitness activities
A sports district that brings health and everyday activity into the heart of the neighbourhood.
03
Blend arts and crafts with communal co-working spaces
Community centres that connect residents by combining co-working, business hubs, art and urban farming.
04
Design commercial nodes as part of the streets and recreational spaces
A precinct for people: inclusive, inviting streets where everyone can shop, socialise and relax.
05
Make parks with playful and discovery elements
Parks and play spaces that invite people of every age to explore and stay.
06
Identify and build on the existing character of the streets
Streets designed to celebrate character, history, the subtropical climate and sustainability.
